Marines hosted the Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROKMC) Commandant, Lt. Gen. Ju Il-Suk, and a delegation across the National Capital Region.

Throughout the week, U.S. and ROKMC leaders discussed training, education, and force modernization at key military installations, and laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Chosin Few Memorial.

Coinciding with the 76th anniversary of the Korean War, the visit reaffirmed the ironclad alliance and set the stage for deeper bilateral cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

Amphibious Activities

U.S. Marine Corps scout swimmers with Battalion Landing Team 1/1, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, secure the beach during a bi-lateral boat raid exercise off the coast of Okinoerabu, Japan, March 11, 2024.

The 31st MEU and the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade used the boat raid exercise to rehearse rapid seizure of key maritime terrain during Iron Fist 24.

Iron Fist is an annual bilateral exercise designed to increase interoperability and strengthen the relationships between the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force, and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.

The Marines are forward deployed in the Indo-Pacific under 4th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division, as part of the Unit Deployment Program.

미 해병대 캠프무적, 경북의 우수한 정신·문화 배운다. 사진 경상북도

경북도는 미 해병대 캠프무적 장병 및 직원 20여 명을 대상으로 9월 4~5일까지 1박 2일간 ‘경북의 정신 바로 알기 교육사업’을 진행한다.

이번 교육은 경북도가 경북경찰청 및 한국국학진흥원과 함께 한미동맹 70주년을 맞아 ‘글로벌 포괄적 전략동맹’이라는 양국의 협력을 강화하고자 기획됐다.

미 해병대 캠프무적이 주둔하고 있는 경북 지역의 문화 체험 기회를 제공하고 경북의 역사와 문화, 안보에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히고자 마련했다.

교육 1일 차에는 경북도청 내 충무 시설을 방문해 관·군의 유기적 협력체계를 더욱 굳건히 하고, 튼튼한 지역 안보태세 확립을 통해 도민의 소중한 생명과 재산을 지킬 수 있도록 교류의 시간을 마련했다.

이후 경북경찰청과 경북북부보훈지청을 순차적 방문하고 안동의 대표적 현충 시설인 6.25 참전 국가유공자비, 안동교 전투지(강변), 유엔군주둔지(용상), 6.25 참전용사 명예 선양비(월영교) 등을 방문해 작전지역에 대한 역사를 배우고 대한민국 수호를 위해 헌신했던 한·미 장병들의 노고에 감사를 표했다.

특히 전통부채 채색체험, 전통 의복 체험, 활쏘기 체험, 목판 인출 체험, 도산서원 알묘 체험 등 경북의 정신과 문화가 깃든 현장 체험활동을 통해 미 해병대 장병과 직원들의 큰 호응을 끌어냈다.

김상철 경북도 문화관광체육국장은 “경북의 정신 바로 알기 교육사업이 미 해병대 캠프무적 장병과 직원들에게 유익하고 뜻깊은 교육이 됐길 바란다”라며, “앞으로도 관·군이 지속적으로 교류하고, 경북의 우수한 정신문화를 널리 알릴 기회를 확대하도록 노력하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

미 해병대 장진호 참전용사 스티븐 옴스테드 에비역 중장 별세

미 해병대 1사단 소속으로 6·25전쟁에 이등병으로 참전해 장진호전투에서 활약했던 스티븐 옴스테드 예비역 미 해병대 중장이 향년 92세로 별세했다.

미국의소리(VOA)방송은 미 장진호전투 참전용사협회 등을 인용해 옴스테드 중장이 지난 20일(현지시간) 미국 버지니아주 애넌데일 자택에서 병원으로 이송된 뒤 숨을 거뒀다고 24일 보도했다.

옴스테드 중장은 뉴욕 올버니 출신으로 미국 해병 1사단 소속 사병으로 6·25전쟁에 참전해 인천상륙작전과 장진호전투 등에서 활약한 뒤 41년간 군 생활을 마치고 1989년 3성 장군으로 예편했다.

로널드 레이건 행정부에서 국방부 부차관보를 지냈으며 장진호전투 기념비 건립 추진단체의 고문을 맡기도 했다.

문재인 전 대통령이 2017년 방미 당시 장진호전투 기념비 헌화 일정에서 옴스테드 중장을 직접 만나 허리를 90도로 굽혀 인사하며 감사와 예를 표하기도 했다.

워싱턴포스트는 20일(현지시간) 미국 해병대가 246년 전 창설된 이래 최초 흑인 4성 장군의 탄생을 앞두고 있다고 보도했다.

워싱턴포스트의 보도에 따르면 마이클 E. 랭글리 중장은 해병대에서 가장 높은 4성급 아프리카 주둔 미 사령부 사령관 인준을 받기 위해 다음날 열리는 미 상원 군사위원회 인사청문회에 참석할 예정이다.

미 육해공군과 달리 해병대에서는 창설 이래 흑인이 4성 장군으로 진급한 사례는 아직 없다
