On September 29th, digicame-info published those Nikon D800 specs (Google translation):

• What number of pixels is 3630 megapixels.
• 4 frames per second continuous shooting in body only, about 6 frames per second will be used to DX mode with the optional battery pack.
• A little late to be released by the model resolution sought to eliminate the low-pass filter.
• Full HD video in 1920 × 1080/30p.
• Headphone jacks, can be input from an external device such as a PCM sound recorder. Corresponding to USB3.0. Be available in new small wireless transmitter.

I initially did not post this online, but after receiving some additional info I can now confirm with a 99% probability only the name “D800″ and the sensor size of 36MP.

The D800 will basically be a mini-D3x. Do not expect the same high ISO performance as in the D3s. This is probably Nikon solution to separate both product lines (before the D700 and D3 had the same sensor). Please note that I cannot yet confirm the remaining specs above but I believe most of them correct. I am still working on the details and will have some addition info later today or tomorrow.

Stay tuned, it has begun! If the specs are out, expect announcement before the end of the year (I would say 30-60 days from now).

 

The AF and viewfinder coverage of the current D700 will be improved with the D800

Just few more updates on the Nikon D800 specs:

• 100% viewfinder coverage (Nikon D700 has “only” 95% frame coverage).
• Improved AF with face recognition – not sure yet what this means exactly, but the D800 will not have the same 51 points AF system as in the D700 and D3s.
• I was also able to confirm the dual memory card slots but I am still not sure if they will be SD, CF or both (the initial specs mentioned SD+CF).
• USB 3.0 - there is talk that Nikon has been purchasing USB 3.0 chips for some time.

I am still trying to confirm the remaining details and get some additional info. The initial set of specs seems to be accurate (so far the info I published matches with the specs).

Yes, 36MP is a lot, but keep in mind that Nikon has to stay competitive in the future since they will probably not replace and will continue to sell this camera for another 4 years.

Here are some more details on the Nikon D800:

• ISO range:  100 – 6400, ISO LO @ 50 and  ISO HI-2 @ 25600.
• There will be a different D800 version/model (or maybe even a special edition) with the antialiasing filter removed.
• At least two other products will be announced with the D800 (probably lenses). I believe all this is in addition to the consumer DX lens that will announced later this month. Basically we should have at least two more Nikon announcements before the end of 2011.

Again, the Nikon D800 specs published yesterday should be generally correct but I could confirm only what I have listed above (the ISO range and the two addition products are new information, not previously posted).

The Nikon D800 DSLR camera should already be out in the field in several different countries right now, hopefully we will get some spy shots and more detailed specs soon.

This is the list of “confirmed” specs for the Nikon D800 (there are some new updates). My confidence on those is above 90%:

• The name will be Nikon D800
• 36MP sensor
• 100% viewfinder coverage
• Improved AF with face recognition – the D800 will still have 51 points AF point
• Dual memory card slots (still not sure if they will be SD, CF or both)
• USB 3.0
• ISO range: 100 – 6400, ISO LO @ 50 and  ISO HI-2 @ 25600
• The screen will be larger than 3 inches
• The D800 will not have built-in GPS
• Expeed 3 processor
• There will be two different D800 versions/models, one with the antialiasing filter removed
